Can children read News-O-Matic on the computer?

Yes they can! News-O-Matic can be accessed at https://newsomatic.org/ for those subscribed with our special site license. Please email us at info@press4kids.com to find out how to get your school set up with News-O-Matic on the web!

Can children write comments on the articles?

To protect children from unwanted content, readers cannot comment on the articles directly. Children are encouraged to ask questions and draw pictures from our News Room; those questions and drawings may be shared with readers in the following issue.

Can children share articles with social media?

There is no direct social media access from the News-O-Matic application. We do not encourage our young readers to use social media sites.

Can children save articles?

Yes they can. Just scroll on on icon bar until you find the “Save” icon. Saved articles can be access by tapping on the avatar (the round icon that you can move around the screen). When you tap on that, you will be a tab for “Saved Articles”. Articles can also be printed by tapping on the “Print” icon (device and printer must share same wireless connection).

How to whitelist News-O-Matic on your school network

In order to make sure that your school network is not the cause of the issue, you should ask your network administrator at school to whitelist our newsomatic.net domain.

Here is a small message that you can send to your admin: “News-O-Matic is a daily news application that needs to connect to its domain in order to retrieve the latest news. Please open port 80 outbound for the domain newsomatic.net for all internal IP addresses. Thank you very much for your help. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at: support@press4kids.com ”

How do I create a teacher account? (Only School App, not EDU)

In order to use the Teacher’s Dashboard in News-O-Matic for School, teachers have to register their class and create a teacher account.

In the login screen, tap the red “Tap here” link to go to the registration form.

The registration firm asks for your name, email address, username, password, and school details.

 

Fill out the form:

  • Enter your name
  • Enter your email address
  • Choose a username (usernames are uniques, you will not be able to choose a username if it already exists in our records)
  • Choose a password (passwords must be at least 6 characters long)
  • Agree to the Terms and Conditions
  • Enter your school details.

 

School Details

 

First, check if your school is already registered in our database. To do so, enter your school’s ZIP code and check the “Select School” menu for your school.
If your school is not in the menu, you have to register it by following these steps:

 

  • Tap the purple “Add School” button.
  • First enter your school’s ZIP code.
  • If you are in the US, choose your school’s State. If not, leave this field blank.
  • Enter your school’s district name.
  • Enter your school’s name.

Then, tap the “Register” button. You should see this screen:

 

 

Confirming your registration

 

To confirm your registration, click on the link we send to the email address you registered. If you cannot find this confirmation email in your inbox or spam folder, please contact us!

Once the registration is confirmed, you should be able to login with your teacher account! ​​You can login at any time by tapping the profile bubble head (in the purple circle), then heading to the “Login” tab, and entering your username and password.

How do I create a class and create profiles for my students?

First, login using your teacher account. You should see a red “Teacher” button in the upper left corner of the app’s homescreen.

When logged in as a teacher, the app homescreen shows a red Teacher button.

 

Creating a class

 

Tap the red “Teacher” button to access your Teacher’s Dashboard. Then, in the dashboard, tap the “Menu” button, then tap “Add Class”.

Enter the name of your class, the grade you teach, and at least one student’s first name, last name, username and password (passwords have to be at least 6 characters long). Then, click the “Save Class” button.

Adding Students to a Class

 

To add students to a class, first make sure that the dashboard shows the class you want to add students to.
Then, tap the “Menu” button and tap “Class Login Info”.

 

 

Enter student details for the students you want to add to the class, then tap the “Save Class” button. You can add several students. The app will register your new students, and display a red “Saved” text.

 

 

Note that it may take some time for the app to process the new students’ registration.

How do I add custom questions?

From the Teacher’s Dashboard, select the edition you want to add questions to using the menu next to the “Assessment Questions” button. Then, tap the blue “Assessment Questions” button.

How do students answer questions?

Each article comes with two multiple-choices, CCSS-aligned questions for your students to answer. Once you created custom questions, your students can also answer these questions.

In order to record answers, the app requires students to login. To login, tap the avatar circle, then tap the “Login” tab in the green screen:

 

 

 

 

Once your students are logged in the app (using the usernames and passwords you created for them first), they can open an article. In the right side of the screen, in the menu, use the scrolling arrow to scroll down until they see the “Questions” button.

Tapping the “Questions” button will bring the questions panel. It has two multiple choices questions, and the custom question you have added:

Once students have answered all the questions, they can submit their answers by tapping the “Send” button that appears then.

How do I check my students' answers?

Once your students have answered questions, you can check their scores and their answers in the Teacher’s Dashboard.
Login as an teacher, then open the Teacher’s Dashboard by tapping the red “Teacher” button in the upper left corner of the app’s homescreen.

How do I use the class chat?

The class chat allows students to ask or answer questions.

To turn on the Class Chat, go to the Teacher’s Dashboard by tapping the red “Teachers” button in the upper left corner of the app’s homescreen (you have to be logged in as a teacher), then close the app and reopen it.

 

 

In an article, tapping the “Class Chat” button on the left side of the screen will open the Class Chat window.

How do I get the Spanish translations?

To read the Spanish translation, first open the article you want to read in Spanish, then use the scrolling arrows in the menu bar on the right side of the screen to scroll down. Scroll Down until you see the Spanish button:

 

 

Tap the “Spanish” button to read the translated article! Once the article is translated, you can scroll up and tap the “Read to Me” button to hear a Spanish voice recording of the article!

How do I change reading levels?

News-O-Matic for School makes it possible to change reading levels for individual students. Here’s how to do it.

First, make sure that you are logged in as a teacher. You should see the red “Teachers” button in the home page of the app.

 

 

Tap the red “Teachers” button to access the Teacher’s Dashboard.

 

 

Then, tap the “Reading Level” menu next to the student’s name:

The menu has 3 reading levels to choose from.

  • Level 1-2 levels between a 400L-600L Lexile measure
  • Level 3-4 levels between a 600L-750L Lexile measure
  • Level 5+ levels between a 750L-1050L Lexile measure

Once the reading level is set, make sure to close and reopen the app on your students’ iPads to ensure that changes take place. To do so, double tap the home button on the iPad and swipe the News-O-Matic app preview up to force it to close. When reopening the app, your students should have the correct reading level.

How do I check or manage my News-O-Matic subscription?

You can go to your account information in the Settings section of your device. Go to the App Store, scroll to the bottom of the homepage, and tap your Apple ID. Then tap “View Account” and enter your password. In the Subscriptions section, tap “Manage.”

How many devices can I connect to one subscription?

You can connect up to 3 devices to one single subscription. To do that, you have to log in to each device with one single Apple ID. Each iPad can be logged back onto its own Apple ID once the installation process is completed. Download the app on each iPad with the same account. On one of the devices, purchase a subscription in the News-O-Matic app. On the other devices, tap the “subscribe now” button on the front page of News-O-Matic, then tap “restore your subscription.” Enter the Apple ID and password.

The app is not recognizing me as a subscriber! What do I do?

Go to the front page of the News-O-Matic app. Then tap the “Subscribe Now” button at the top-left corner. Once on the subscription page, tap the blue button on the left that says, “Restore your subscription”. Then enter your Apple ID/Password. You might have to do it several times before it goes through, sometimes more than three times are necessary.

How much does a subscription to News-O-Matic cost?

You can subscribe to a monthly subscription for $1.99 a month, or an annual subscription for $19.99 a year. Each of these options comes with a free trial month before billing begins.

Who processes my payment?

iTunes handles all financial transactions. If you have any questions or if you wish to cancel your subscription and get a refund, contact iTunes support directly: apple.com/support/itunes.
