To celebrate Tell A Story Day on April 27, we are asking you to become a script writer!
We are inviting you to enter News-O-Matic’s Tell A Story contest. All you have to do is write your own movie or play scene. Our guest director, Shawn Levy, will select the winners! Mr. Levy has directed many blockbusters, including Night at the Museum, Cheaper by the Dozen, and Big Fat Liar.
WHO: Entries are divided into two age groups: 6–10 AND 11–14. A winner will be selected from both groups. This contest is open to children in any country in the world.
WHAT: Write your own movie or play scene! Use a setting, characters, and conversations to tell a story. It should be about 250 words. All submissions must be original work. There is no charge to enter, so submit as many stories as you’d like! Submit alone or submit as part of a group.
Example Scene from Frozen
Setting: The palace’s Great Hall at night. Springy music fills the Great Hall. Guests dance, eat, and laugh.
ELSA: You look beautiful.
ANNA: Thank you. You look beautifuller. I mean, not fuller. You don’t look fuller, but more beautiful.
ELSA: Thank you.
They look out at the celebration.
ELSA: So, this is what a party looks like?
ANNA: It’s warmer than I thought.
ELSA: And what is that amazing smell?
They both close their eyes and inhale.
ANNA AND ELSA (TOGETHER): …Chocolate.
Their eyes pop open. They laugh.
Scene-writing tips from Levy:
- Describe the setting. Where does the scene take place?
- Have two to four characters.
- Add a challenge for the character to face.
- Make sure the hero grows or learns by the end of the scene.
WHEN: All entries must be submitted by 11:59 P.M. (ET) on April 6, 2016. Levy will read the top scripts and choose the winner to be published on April 27 — Tell A Story Day!
HOW: Send your entry at press4kids.com/TellAStory. Be sure to include your name, a guardian’s email address, and a name for your story.
WHY: The thrill to have a real movie director read your script! The selected scenes will be published on News-O-Matic with Mr. Levy’s comments! All entrants will receive a News-O-Matic certificate just for entering!
